The COVID-19 pandemic has created some limitations on the activities people can do safely. It’s important to pay attention to current recommendations and restrictions to stay healthy and reduce any potential disease transmission throughout the community. Thankfully, visiting your dentist is a low-risk activity that you can continue doing as long as you’re careful to take precautions.

Why Is Visiting the Dentist Low-Risk?

A dental office already has high hygiene standards. Dentists and hygienists follow disease safety guidelines regarding hand washing, mask and glove use, and tool sterilization as part of their ordinary routine, which significantly reduces the risk of spreading any disease, including COVID-19.

Many offices have followed even stricter procedures during the pandemic, such as disinfecting surfaces more frequently, screening patients for symptoms of illness, and spacing out appointments. This effort has paid off: As of November 2020, the American Dental Association reports that less than 3% of dentists have contracted COVID-19, compared to 29% of front-line healthcare workers. That's why you're unlikely to be exposed to this disease at a dental office.

What Precautions Should You Take?

Whenever you leave home, continue to wear a mask, which both reduces your risk of infection and helps protect others around you. When your dentist asks about any COVID-19 symptoms you may be experiencing, be honest. If you’re ill, cancel your appointment; almost all dental issues can wait until you’ve recovered or at least until receiving a negative COVID-19 test result.

If you have a dental emergency while ill, call your dentist and ask them what you should do. They may be able to offer an appointment with extra precautions or suggest short-term solutions until your health improves.
