Chipped teeth are one of the most common oral injuries. Whether you bite too hard on a rigid surface or hit your mouth from a fall, even a small chip left untreated can lead to much more serious problems. Here is a handy guide to why chipped teeth need professional care from your dentist

Why Do Chipped Teeth Need Professional Care?

Not every chipped tooth hurts right away, which might lead you to believe that it does not require a trip to the dentist. However, just like a cavity, any small crack in your tooth is vulnerable to decay and infection. Without prompt intervention, teeth that become infected can discolor and potentially fall out. Even with small chips, sensitive nerves may be exposed over time, making chewing and swallowing hot or cold beverages uncomfortable and painful.

Your mouth is an intricate machine with many parts working together. When an injured tooth is being avoided, it changes your bite pattern, which can cause uneven wear on teeth and affect the way your jaw moves and operates.

What Are the Treatment Options?

For very small chips, your dentist can often shape and sand your tooth down to even out the surface. Another popular treatment is dental bonding. A tooth-colored putty is adhered to the cracked surface. It is then molded and smoothed to blend with your natural tooth shape.

For larger chips where the tooth structure is compromised, you may need a crown, which is a cap that covers and protects your tooth. A crown allows you to keep your natural teeth while maintaining functionality. If you have a more serious, invasive chip, veneers may be required. In this case, the existing tooth will be filed down so a porcelain veneer can be placed on top of it. All of these options keep your natural teeth healthy and prevent any further damage from occurring.
