If your business's building seems colder than usual this winter or if your furnace is running constantly and your utility bills are increasing, it may be time to schedule heating system repairs. Furnaces include many parts that must work together to distribute heat efficiently, so there are several areas that your HVAC contractor may check. Here are some steps that may solve your heating issues.

How to Address Common Heating Issues

1. Clean Filters and Ducts

The air ducts and vents that distribute warm air through your building can collect debris over time. Most heating systems have a filter to catch dust and debris, but these can become clogged and prevent air from passing through your ventilation system.

You can check the filter yourself. It’s normally located in an air duct near the furnace. Replace it every few months, or more in buildings that experience a high volume of debris and pollution. If the filter seems constantly dirty, your air ducts may need to be professionally cleaned.

2. Ignite the Pilot Light

The pilot light ignites natural gas as it runs to your furnace, turning it into heat energy. It should automatically ignite when your furnace is turned on. However, the ignition can sometimes get clogged or bent, preventing the flame from igniting fully. If you can see this part of your furnace, make sure a blue flame is present. If not, call for assistance right away and turn off your furnace and gas line to prevent natural gas from entering the rest of the building.

3. Replace the Thermostat

The thermostat is what tells your HVAC system when to turn on, so if your heat isn’t running at all, check this component first to ensure it’s on the proper setting. If your system still isn’t running or if it cycles on and off too often, the thermostat may need to be replaced. This often occurs due to faulty or loose wiring. New thermostats offer helpful energy efficiency features, like the ability to program different temperatures throughout the day.
