Dental implant surgery can restore both the look and functionality of your smile by replacing missing or damaged teeth. A metal post is embedded into the jawbone, and after a period of healing, it's topped with an artificial tooth. However, because this surgery is more involved, requiring both tooth removal and the implementation of the metal post into the bone, you may be naturally concerned about the recovery process. Here’s what you should know.

What Happens After the Implant Is Placed?

Dental implant surgery involves placing a metal post that will serve as the root for the artificial tooth. However, there's usually a waiting period before the artificial tooth is placed on top of the implant.

The recovery period is mainly meant to let the jawbone fuse with the implant’s surface. This ensures the implant is kept firmly in place and won’t loosen through normal use over the coming years. The gums also need time to heal before the artificial tooth is attached.

Your dentist may require that you stick to a soft diet for the first week after your surgery, though this period may be longer if you're getting multiple implants. Good food options include yogurt, soup, and oatmeal. It's important to avoid carbonated beverages, foods that are extremely hot or cold, and anything crunchy or fibrous that may get stuck between the teeth.

During the first week after your surgery, you may experience pain, swelling and bruising of the gums and face, and minor bleeding near the implant site. Your dentist will typically prescribe antibiotics to control pain and swelling. Applying ice can also control pain.

If you're still experiencing discomfort after two or more weeks, you should contact your dentist. Lingering pain or trouble swallowing or breathing could be a sign of an infection or an allergic reaction to antibiotics.
