When your teeth are crooked or misaligned, the two primary types of treatment are traditional braces and Invisalign® trays. Both are proven methods that lead to an improved smile, but they are quite different and offer distinct advantages. Here's a closer look at each.

Metal Braces

Traditional braces involve stainless steel brackets or bands cemented to each tooth. These are connected via metal wires, which are tightened to slowly move the teeth into the desired position. Braces can't be removed and are worn 24/7 until treatment is complete. This is convenient because you can't misplace them as you might with an Invisalign tray.

Additionally, because they stay in place all the time, treatment time is often shorter. Corrections with braces are more accurate and precise. Because of this, patients often receive better results with braces, no matter how crooked the teeth are or what kind of treatment they require.

Invisalign Trays

Invisalign

Invisalign aligners feature clear plastic trays created using 3-D imagery. Each tray moves the teeth slightly over time as part of a carefully designed process that works with minimal disruption to the wearer's daily life.

Once each tray has completed its alignment, a new tray is created to maneuver the teeth to the next position. The primary advantage is that Invisalign trays are clear, so they are nearly invisible during wear.

They are removable, so it makes it easier to eat, brush your teeth, and engage in contact sports and other activities, although this may slow down treatment. The trays are smooth and feature no sharp wires or brackets, as metal braces do, so many people find them much more comfortable.
