Dental implants are an effective modern way to replace missing teeth. They feature a titanium screw that inserts directly into the jaw, providing a level of stability to the visible component, which is the crown. This is done through osseointegration, a process that allows the surrounding cells to fuse with the foreign material. Understanding how it works could give you the peace of mind you're looking for, so here's a closer look.

What Is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration is when the bone cells in your jaw attach themselves to the surface of the titanium screw. It was first discovered by a Swedish researcher in the 1960s. Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark was testing the interactions between cells and other materials to pinpoint the one that might prove most successful in dental procedures.

Titanium was simply available at the time, but very little was known about its uses outside the military. After inserting it into the inspection chamber, the bone cells immediately started the integration process, fusing themselves to the surface and essentially holding it in place.

Branemark went to remove the material after the experiment but found that the bone had actually grown into the crevices, causing it to become one with the structure. Further research soon found that it’s safe for long-term use and could be recommended as a viable solution for dental implants.

How Does It Factor Into the Implant Process?

The process of osseointegration can take anywhere from three to six months to complete. Dentists will usually place a temporary prosthetic to produce a more natural appearance while you’re healing. Bone grafts may be essential before the procedure to strengthen the jawbone and ensure the necessary support.

Once the osseointegration is complete, the dentist will install the permanent replacement. This serves to protect the condition of the surrounding teeth and restores the health of your bite.
