First introduced in 1998, Invisalign® has grown over the years to become a popular alternative to traditional braces. Despite its impressive success rate and the length of time it’s been available, a number of myths and mistaken ideas still abound about this orthodontic treatment. Here are a few of the more common misconceptions and the truth behind them.

What Are Some Popular Myths About Invisalign?

1. It’s Ineffective

Perhaps the most persistent misconception surrounding Invisalign, and clear aligners in general, is that it won’t work as well as traditional braces and that teeth will revert to their previous alignment after removal. The truth is that, while clear aligners can’t be used to correct more severe orthodontic problems, they’re just as effective as conventional braces at correcting misalignments in a matter of months. Furthermore, the treatment will be more effective the longer you use it, although re-treatment is often beneficial.

2. Kids Can’t Use It

Normal clear aligners can’t be worn by kids until all their adult teeth have grown in, typically around ages 12 to 13. This is because wearing aligners on baby teeth can lead to a range of complications, and because kids can forget to put their aligners back in after removing them.

However, Invisalign offers Invisalign First for kids from ages 6 and up and Invisalign Teen for adolescents. Further alignment may be needed as kids grow, but this can help them avoid additional treatment at a later age.

3. No Special Care Is Required

Traditional braces require diligent daily cleaning and care, since they can’t be removed and food particles can easily become trapped in them. Many people assume that, since clear aligners can be removed, they don’t require the same level of hygienic care. However, even when wearing removable braces, it’s still important to brush and floss and to clean and soak the trays daily to prevent decay, gum disease, and other issues.
