Shapes are everywhere in the natural world and play an important role in early childhood learning. As such, shape recognition is a primary focus for children in preschool. It helps kids distinguish between objects, develop problem-solving skills, and learn how to count. Here are some fun and easy activities you can do with your toddler at home to give them a good grasp on this concept.

How to Teach Shape Recognition

1. Go on a Scavenger Hunt

A shape scavenger hunt can be done inside the home, while out for a walk, or running errands. Show your child a picture of which geometric figure you want them to search for, such as a square, circle, or triangle. Decide how many items you want them to collect or point out in that structure, then let them wander to see what they can find. You can also place cut-outs of shapes around the house and have them look for those.

2. Use Modeling Clay

Playing with modeling clay will allow your child to mold their own shapes. They can use cookie cutters to create them or make 3D models. You can also draw shapes on sheets of paper and have them trace the perimeter of each one with modeling clay. Make it more interesting with different sizes and colors so they can highlight the distinguishing characteristics between them all.

3. Read Books

Numerous texts are available that explore early childhood learning concepts, including shapes. Looking at board books or picture books helps preschool kids become familiar with the different geometric figures. The bright graphics and illustrations will capture their attention and allow them to relate the shapes to many items they see every day.
