Do's and Don'ts of Teaching Kids to Share
Sharing is a skill that takes time and patience to develop. For most kids, this ability doesn't come naturally. They learn it from observing the adults around them and practicing it while at day care. As you teach your child about this practice, keep these guidelines in mind.
Do:
Consider their age.
Sharing comes with age. Young children are still gaining situational awareness and have yet to understand the fundamentals of interacting with others. Therefore, you shouldn't worry too much about teaching kids to share until they're two or three years old.
Set expectations.
Sharing items with siblings or friends at a day care center can be challenging if kids don't know what to expect. To help your little one get used to the practice, set time limits for toys or games so that they know when it's their turn.
You can even use a timer with older children. With this approach, they are prepared to switch once their turn ends.
Lead by example.
Kids are most likely to share if the adults around them are modeling the behavior. Make a point of mentioning when you're sharing with someone else, and compliment others for sharing and being generous with you.
Don't:
Force kids to share.
Kids are often reluctant to share, so avoid creating stress or discord by forcing them to do it. Ultimately, they need to be motivated to perform this practice on their own. Using fear, guilt, or force won't effectively convey the message.
Lose your temper if kids fail to share.
Naturally, adults get frustrated when kids don't listen and display good behavior. However, social skills take time to master, so you shouldn't lash out if something goes wrong. Every child is different; some are more naturally agreeable, while others are less likely to share unless compelled to. Keep these natural differences in mind as you work with young kids, and remain patient.
Take the item away.
The best way for kids to learn how to share is through practice — even if there are times when it doesn't go smoothly. Unless the situation escalates to a dangerous point, don't upset your little one by seizing the item they should be sharing.
