Getting a new cat is an exciting time. Every animal has a distinct personality and inquisitive nature, but all of them tend to provide us comfort with their presence. If you're a first-time cat owner, you may be wondering what pet care supplies you need to welcome the new addition to the family. Here are some of the items you should pick up to welcome a new kitty home.

4 Supplies First-Time Cat Owners Should Have

1. A Carrier

pet careYou’ll need a way to transport your new four-legged companion home and to the vet. Choose a carrier or crate that’s sturdy, provides ventilation, and has a zipper or door that latches shut. Avoid using cardboard boxes, since these don't provide enough stability or airflow and can frighten your kitty.

2. Food & Water

Having food and fresh water to welcome your new cat can help them understand that they’ve arrived at their new home. Choose bowls with heavy or weighted bottoms so they don't tip over. Your veterinarian, adoption shelter, or breeder can help you pick a healthy type of food, but the general rule is to avoid feeds with filler ingredients such as modified cornstarch and cottonseed hulls. Consider putting them on a diet of wet food, which provides hydration and reduces the amount of carbohydrates they eat to help prevent obesity.

3. Litter Box

Your cat will also need a litter box to use the bathroom in. An enclosed version can give them some privacy and help prevent litter from flying out in all directions when they cover their droppings. Cats don’t like being watched as they use the litter box, so tuck it in a place they can easily access but doesn’t see too much foot traffic, such as a corner of your living room.

4. A Vet

A veterinarian can give your cat all of the vaccines they need, as well as a wellness exam to ensure your new family member has no existing or potential health issues. You'll likely have more than a few pet care questions, too, and a veterinarian can provide you with expert answers.
