Wood fences and gates are popular because they’re naturally beautiful, but wood is also the least durable fence material most providers offer. To protect it from insects, rot, and weathering, it needs regular maintenance. In most cases, you can extend the life of your fence to 10 or 15 years by following these tips.

How to Maintain Your Wood Fence & Gate

1. Wash It Regularly

Dirt, leaves, and grass clippings clinging to the structure can trap moisture against it, encouraging wood rot. Colonies of mold also develop on the surface of the wood, damaging it. At least once a year, use a pressure washer to strip away dirt and mold. Even though this gets the fence wet, it allows the wood to dry out completely afterward and stalls the deterioration process.

2. Remove Anything Touching It

Objects touching your fence can trap moisture just like debris stuck to it does and act as a bridge for termites and wood boring beetles. Avoid letting anything touch or lean on the wood, including firewood piles, garden tools, and yard decorations. Trim plants back so there’s a gap between them and the wood. Also, avoid hanging too many heavy decorations on the structure; this can cause it to lean.

3. Paint & Seal It

An outer coating of weatherproof paint or wood sealer helps protect the wood from absorbing water and discourages bugs. It needs to be reapplied every two to three years, whenever it starts to peel, or immediately after being stripped off by your pressure washer. Wash the fence, let it dry for about two days, then apply a generous, thorough coat of your chosen paint.
