Fences can serve practical and aesthetic functions, improving curb appeal while keeping pets safely within your yard. Unfortunately, dogs can chew or dig under such barriers, potentially compromising their effectiveness. Here are three tips to prevent pets from damaging fences.

3 Tips to Stop Your Dog From Damaging Your Fence

1. Create Barriers with Landscaping

Planting shrubs or placing boulders alongside the fence can enhance your yard’s aesthetic and provide a physical barrier to stop your dog from accessing the fence. These can shield any gaps in the structure as well. Placing gravel ground cover near the border may help too. If it isn’t comfortable for your dog to lie near the fence, they may be less tempted to chew or dig beneath it.

2. Try Training

Try to determine why your dog is damaging the fence and address the root cause. For instance, puppies teethe just like human babies and may chew on wood fences to relieve discomfort. Providing them with chew toys may help.

Alternatively, if your dog is past teething age and still chews, they may be bored. Taking more walks or increasing playtime might help them work out some energy. Keeping an eye on your dog and firmly telling them “No” when they begin to chew or dig can discourage such behaviors too.

3. Use a Repellant Solution

If barriers and behavioral techniques don’t suffice, consider using a nontoxic, but unpalatable, repellant to stop your pup from chewing. These are available at most pet stores, or you can make your own at home.

To create a DIY mixture, combine apple cider vinegar and water. Whichever method you choose, drench rags in the solution and hang them from the structure. Reapply the solution periodically, as its strength will wane with time.
