Warm and wet summers typically encourage the growth of beautiful grass. However, it's normal for dry periods to occur, resulting in the need to apply additional water to your yard. The following guide offers some lawn irrigation tips to keep your grass lush and healthy during the summer.

Do:

Install a lawn irrigation system.

Sprinkler systems run automatically, which prevents you from spending time manually watering your lawn. Additionally, they often provide more thorough irrigation than sprinklers that connect to your garden hose. A contractor can strategically install the heads to ensure all areas of your lawn receive moisture. Additionally, you won't have to worry about remembering to water your grass since these systems operate at specific times based on preprogrammed settings.

Apply enough water.

During the summer, lawns require about one inch of water per week, which equals about 600 gallons for every 1,000 square feet. Consult the owner's manual for your irrigation system to determine its moisture output each hour. This precaution can let you know how often and long to run your system, allowing you to tune the settings to ensure your grass receives enough water.

Don't:

Water in the evening.

Watering your lawn in the evening prevents excess moisture from evaporating. If extra water lingers on your grass, fungal diseases such as root rot and fairy ring may develop and cause dead patches. Run your sprinklers early in the morning so that the sun's heat can dry up residual moisture throughout the day.

Ignore dehydration signs.

Symptoms of lawn dehydration include drooping, wilting, or curling grass blades. You might also notice that blades don't bounce back after you walk across your yard, resulting in lasting footprints. As soon as you detect dehydration, run your sprinklers to prevent dryness and dead spots.
