With summer coming soon, you might be planning a big backyard barbecue for friends and family. When you’re anticipating a large crowd, a keg of beer is sure to please. While tapping a keg can seem complex if it’s your first time, the below guide will clear up any confusion.
3 Simple Steps to Tapping a Keg of Beer
1. Chill the Keg
Before tapping the keg, make sure it's properly chilled. The ideal temperature for serving beer is between 38 to 42 degrees Fahrenheit. If the keg is warm, it will foam up and be harder to tap. To chill the keg, place it in a bucket of ice or a refrigerator for at least 24 hours before tapping.
If you don't chill the keg, the beer will come out too fast and foamy. To avoid this, make sure the keg is properly chilled before tapping. Wrap the keg in a wet towel and place it in the freezer for a few hours to speed up the chilling process.
2. Tap and Engage
When the keg is properly chilled, it's time to tap it. Remove the plastic or metal cap from the top of the keg and insert the tap. Turn the tap clockwise until it's firmly in place. Once that’s done, pull the handle forward to engage the beer flow.
You should hear a hissing sound as the pressure is released from the keg. If you don't tap the keg correctly, the beer will come out too slowly or not at all. Make sure the tap is firmly in place and engaged properly. Use a mallet to tap the keg if the tap is hard to insert.
3. Pour the Drinks
Now that the keg is tapped and engaged, it's time to pour the drinks. Hold a cup or glass at a 45-degree angle under the tap and pull the handle forward to release the beer. Tilt the cup upright as it fills to reduce foam.
If the beer comes out too foamy, wait a few seconds for the foam to settle before pouring again. Don't overfill the cup or glass. Leave some room at the top for the foam.
