Proper hauling and handling of coal are essential to keeping your team safe. Due to its elemental nature, coal is at high risk for fire or explosion when improperly managed. Have your team follow some safety guidelines to work with this volatile material free of concern. Here are three big ones.

Safety Guide for Coal Hauling

1. Use Bucket Elevators

Bucket elevators are ideal for moving coal vertically and can be used for anything other than wet materials. Utilize a centrifugal belt configuration to move material as efficiently as possible. The elevator works by scooping up materials at the bottom of the belt and carrying it upward, where it’s dumped into a separate container.

2. Add Conveyors

Conveyors are ideal for moving the material laterally. You can use this equipment safely by installing the proper system. For example, infrared cameras will check the temperature of the coal to find any hot spots and remove them before they enter the dome. A linear heat cable detects sparks or fire. If it finds one, it will immediately stop the belt and sound the alarm. A built-in flame suppression system can then put out the fire.

3. Prevent Dust

haulingDust is a common problem with coal and can become a hazard by impacting air quality. Add dust-reducing customizations to your materials to combat this issue. For example, you can add integrated skirtboards and exhaust ports on conveyors to contain and properly ventilate the dust. A water-injection system can be a huge help as well. Minimize the number of transfer points and the distance the coal is dropped into bins to keep the level of dust down.
