Pink eye, also called conjunctivitis, is extremely common. Different strains have distinct symptoms, although all make the eye appear bloodshot and pink. Below, the optometrists at EyeOptics Optometry Center in Elk Grove, CA, explain three causes of pink eye, their symptoms, and treatment options.

3 Causes of Pink Eye

1. Allergies

Irritants such as pollen, dust, animal dander and hair, and smoke can cause the blood vessels in the conjunctiva to dilate, making the eye appear bloodshot. Other symptoms include dry, red, itchy, or teary eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis isn’t contagious and is often seasonal. You can use over-the-counter allergy medications to treat it, although it’s important to figure out the source of the issue to reduce your chances of future infection.

2. Bacteria

Symptoms can include greenish-yellow viscous discharge coming from one or both eyes, and the eyelids may be stuck together when you wake up. Bacterial infections are spread through direct skin-to-skin contact, often through the hands. Your doctor may prescribe eye drops or creams to clear the infection.

3. Virus

This type of pink eye, like other viral infections, is very contagious. Like a cold, it can be spread through touch. It typically clears up on its own after a few days. Symptoms include watery, itchy eyes and sometimes light sensitivity. Natural eyewashes such as chamomile tea or applying cool washcloths to the eyes several times a day can reduce symptoms. If the infection lasts more than two weeks, see your optometrist.

Pink eye is an irritating condition but, fortunately, it’s highly treatable. If you have bacterial conjunctivitis or have been experiencing symptoms of an eye infection for more than a few days, see your optometrist for help. Sacramento County residents turn to EyeOptics Optometry Center for all of their adult and pediatric eye care needs, no matter if it is vision therapy, infection treatment, or designer frame orders.
