Adopting a new pet is a joyous occasion, but it also requires preparing your home for a curious animal, just like you would for a baby. To keep your companion safe, consult an electrician on pet-proofing, and take these steps to eliminate the most common hazards.

How to Keep Your Pets & Electrical System Safe

1. Hide Electrical Cords

Teething puppies may gnaw on exposed cords, which can result in shocks or burns. Talk to your electrician about sealing cords in pet-proof coatings like PVC protective cables. It’s also helpful to hide cords under rugs or carpets, so your pet won’t even see them.

If these options don’t work, try spraying the cords with bitter apple, the taste of which repels pets.

2. Rein in Longer Cords

Chewing isn’t the only problem for long cords. Puppies and kittens can get caught in long, slack cords, leading to sprains or broken bones.

Use plastic ties, electrical tape, or rubber bands to bind up the slack. Take in the slack as close to the top of the appliance as possible to keep it out of the way.

3. Put Electrical Appliances Away

ElectricianWhile it may be convenient to keep an electrical appliance within easy reach, safety is a bigger concern with a new pet. A curious cat can knock a toaster, hairdryer, or other device into a full sink or tub. Even if no one is injured as a result, this type of accident may be enough to short out your home, requiring an electrician to repair the problem.

4. Use Tamper-Resistant Outlets

Newer homes are likely equipped with tamper-resistant outlets. If you live in an older home, you may have to ask your electrical company to install them. These special outlets close once the prongs of a plug are withdrawn, which prevents pets from tampering with the outlets and being exposed to electrical shocks.
