Deciding When to Retire is Not Always Easy
What's the Best Time to Retire?
Some people retire with a splash. There’s a social media leak, lots of twitter action, newspaper articles speculating on whether it will happen, and then -- an announcement! Pow! Kaboom, and the world knows it has happened! This supercharged media event is definitely only for star athletes like Tom Brady and Derek Jeter. But, don’t worry. They struggle, just like the rest of us, thinking about the best time to retire.
Brady is 44 and Jeter was 40 when he retired. Their bones and bodies had been through three lifetimes of action and pounding by the time they called it quits. But, a decision on what will give life meaning and purpose after retirement is not easy. Indeed, all the money, accomplishments and accolades isn't enough to waltz away and say "I'm done." Brady can’t throw a beautiful pass for a touchdown anymore or lead his team to one more glorious Super Bowl victory. Jeter, upon retirement, couldn't throw one more fast and furious baseball from shortstop to 1st base for an out or hit a home run before millions of adoring fans. This is a loss and is hard to give up, just like giving up the opportunity for one last powerful argument in court or designing a remarkable building or leading a sales team to another big client win.
