When you get bifocals as your prescription eyeglasses, it can take time to adjust to using them. Bifocals are glasses that have multiple corrective lenses that can help with focusing on both objects close and far away. Once you get used to them, they can make your life much easier, so you aren’t constantly needing to switch glasses. Here's what you should know ot help you adjust to wearing bifocals for the first time.

3 Tips for Getting Used to Bifocals

1. Wear Them All the Time

In the beginning, wearing your bifocals all the time will help you adjust to them much faster than if you wear them for a little bit of time each day. In the morning, put on your bifocals and keep them on all day as long as possible. If these are your first pair of prescription eyeglasses, then you can wear them only when you need them. However, doing this will take much longer for your eyes to get used to using bifocals.

2. Don’t Look Down While Walking

You might immediately notice that the bifocals can seem disorienting at first while walking. Try to avoid looking at your feet through the bottom part of your bifocals, especially when walking down stairs. Instead, if you need to look down, tilt your head down far enough that you can peer over the top part of the glasses.

3. Make Adjustments to How You Read

Bifocals can help make reading easier, but it takes time to learn how to use them while reading. Hold your reading material about 16 to 18 inches away from your face at a downward angle. Make sure to look through the bottom part of the bifocals. Keep your head still and move the reading material instead when you need to.
