Millions of people use corrective lenses to see more clearly. For many, contact lenses are a convenient alternative to glasses. However, some may find contacts uncomfortable. If you’ve experienced dry, irritated eyes while wearing contacts, here are four tips to feel more at ease.

How to Make Contacts More Comfortable

1. Practice Proper Care

Although about 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses, only about 40% to 90% follow proper care instructions. This includes washing your hands before and after removing the lenses as well as storing them in an appropriate container and using a cleansing solution. Proper hygiene also includes seeing your optometrist for routine checkups and replacing your storage case every few months, as buildup may accumulate on the surface. Also, never sleep while wearing contacts, as it restricts oxygen flow to the eyes and results in discomfort. In severe cases, it may even scratch the eye.

2. Give Your Eyes a Rest

contactlensWearing contacts all day can dry out your lenses and your eyes. Give your eyes a rest by using a rehydrating solution to add more moisture during the day. Also, consider switching to eyeglasses when you get home at night and for a couple of days a week, to give your eyes a chance to rehydrate.

3. Use Eye Drops

There are different kinds of eye drops for various ailments on the market, so make sure you use one specifically designed for contact lenses. Ask your optometrist for a recommendation for the best results, as some are safer and more effective than others. Using a couple of drops of liquid on your lenses while you’re wearing them can keep them lubricated and enhance comfort. Eye drops are easily portable, so consider keeping some in your purse, backpack, or desk.

4. Try a Different Type

If you’ve attempted various remedies to no avail, talk to your optometrist about trying a new kind of contact lens. The main types are hard and soft, but there are many sub-types in each category. For instance, you might do better with daily disposable lenses, rather than reusable ones, or lenses with a different water content level.
