If you operate a small business, you may already know how invaluable an air compressor can be. It has innumerable uses, such as operating pneumatic tools, filling tires and balloons, cleaning crevices with directed air, and airbrush painting. If you have one or are considering a purchase, the following are the do’s and don'ts of using an air compressor.

Do:

Wear ear protection.

Air compressors make a lot of noise, so be sure to wear ear protectors before using one for an extended period. Compressors have different decibel ratings, some as much as 90 dB, depending on the size and manufacturer. Noises above 70 dB can cause hearing loss over time, so take precautions. Also, keep children and animals away during use to protect their hearing.

Check the oil.

Air compressor in Maryland Heights, MOBefore each use, open the engine cover and make sure the machine has oil. The oil lubricates moving parts, helps dissipate heat, and extends the life of the motor. Make sure the oil level is at the "Full" line. Top off when necessary, but do not overfill, as that can create unwanted engine pressure. Drain and change the oil and filter at least once per year, or twice if the equipment receives heavy use.

Don't:

Wear loose clothing.

Before operating an air compressor, remove any dangling jewelry, clothing, or scarves. The engine has numerous moving parts, and loose items can tangle and injure you. Button your sleeves, and tie back any long hair. Preferably, wear short sleeves or sleeves that conform closely to the arms.

Use the compressed air on people or pets.

You might be tempted to direct the compressed air on yourself, a colleague, or a pet. This can be dangerous since the force of the expelling air is powerful. In addition to the noise issue, the air can also perforate skin or blast debris into the eyes.
