Why Is the Air Conditioning System Leaking?

1. Dirty Air Filter

Due to the particulate buildup, the AC's evaporator coils freeze since the air can't reach them. The ice will then thaw and leak when these components warm up again. 

To prevent this from happening, replace the filters at least once every 90 days. You may need to do it more frequently if you use the unit often, as well as if pets or individuals with allergies live in your home.

2. Blocked Condensate Drain Line

As the AC system cools the air, it creates moisture. The condensation gets diverted away through a drain pipe, but this line can become blocked by dust, dirt, and other debris. 

Instead of moving out of the unit, the water collects inside until it eventually spills out. The condensate drain pipe can also rupture, which requires more serious AC repair. For this reason, the line should be cleaned and flushed as part of a regular maintenance schedule.

3. Damaged Drain Pan

A drain pan underneath the evaporator coils catches condensation before it exits through the drain pipe. If it has rusted or become damaged, the water will leak inside your home instead of flowing outside as it should. Check for this problem by inspecting the drain pan for cracks, holes, or rust. It may need to be replaced, particularly if the air conditioner is older than 10 to 12 years.

4. Low Refrigerant Levels

When the AC's refrigerant levels are too low, the evaporator coils usually freeze over. The ice will eventually thaw, and the excess water will cause the drain pan to overflow. This issue usually develops due to a leak somewhere in the system, which an AC repair technician can address.
