As you age, changes in your hearing can be subtle. This means that many people don't realize that they have a problem that is slowly causing them to isolate themselves. Fortunately, testing for hearing loss is painless and quick. Consider seeing an audiologist if you experience any of the following.

What Are Reasons to Get a Hearing Test?

1. It's Harder to Distinguish Noises

Age-related hearing loss affects the way your brain processes sound. Higher pitched noises become harder to distinguish, making it challenging to follow conversations in social settings with loud background noise.

It can also be harder to understand TV dialogue. Get your ears checked if you have to raise the TV volume consistently or if others watching with you find the sound level uncomfortable. You shouldn't often need to up the volume to the far left-hand side of the soundbar.

2. You're Reading Lips Instead of Listening

When listening is too hard, people often read lips instead. This can be challenging, causing them to avoid conversations, especially when it involves multiple people. As a result, they can miss valuable information about their friends' or relatives' lives. When seeing the difference between certain sounds is easier than hearing them, consider getting a hearing test.

3. Your Ears Feel Clogged

Those with age-related hearing loss experience dull, muffled hearing. Even if your ears are free from wax buildup, it may feel like your ears are clogged. See a doctor about this issue rather than digging around in your ear with cotton swabs as this could exacerbate any damage.

4. There Is Constant Ringing

Ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus, is a common condition. It can be caused by exposure to loud noises, damaged hair cells in the cochlea, or even health issues with the jawbone. However, it is most common in older individuals as researchers believe it is the brain's way of making up for the loss of auditory input. Since this ringing can cover sounds like station alerts or car horns, it can make you more at risk of accidents. Because of this, you should see an audiologist right away.
