Bedbugs are stubborn, but once found, exterminating them is fairly straightforward. During the day, they hide in a wide variety of tiny spaces, including cracks no wider than a credit card, where they are difficult to notice or identify. Below are a few warning signs to watch out for.

Where to Look for Bedbugs

exterminatingBedbugs may spend their days almost anywhere in the home: inside wall outlets, behind picture frames, in the cracks of furniture, in clothing and luggage, and any other space with cracks or folds to hide in. But at night, they creep out of their hiding places and climb up to your bed to feed. The best way to find them is to look for the signs they leave on your bedding.

Signs of Bedbugs in Your Bed

Take the sheets off your bed and look at the mattress, especially along seams and edges. Some bedbugs may choose this as their daytime hiding place. If you find any, you can start by washing the bedding in hot water and calling a professional for exterminating the colony.

Sometimes, you won’t find live bedbugs, but there will be other signs to tell you that you need exterminating. These include the following:

  • Droppings: Bedbug droppings are tiny black, brown, or rust-colored dots. They can leave reddish or brownish stains onto your bedding.

  • Eggs: Bedbug eggs are difficult to see without a magnifying glass, but you may be able to identify them. They are whitish, stick to the surface where they were laid, and hatch juvenile bedbugs the size of a pinhead.

  • Molts: Like many insects, bedbugs grow by shedding their skin and forming a new, larger one. You may find these empty molts, which can be yellow or brownish and range in size from a pinhead to their adult size of under ¼ of an inch.
