Whether you're replacing an old pump or have just had a new well drilled, you'll need a water pump installation. There are a few popular types of pumps available, each with its own benefits and ideal applications. Using the following guide, you can compare your options to find the right pump for your well.

Popular Well Pump Types

1. Submersible

This is the most popular choice in water pump installation for the average residential or irrigation well. The pump is installed underwater inside a waterproof housing and works by pushing the water upward from below with an impeller motor rather than pulling it up from the top. Because it is submerged, it does not need to be primed. This type of pump can be used in deep and shallow wells.

2. Centrifugal

This pump has a simple design and a small footprint, making it a cost-effective option for a shallow well. A single pipe enters the well through the borehole, and the pump uses an impeller to generate a centrifugal force that pulls the water up.

3. Shallow Jet Pump

Also called a single drop jet pump, this sits above the well in the well housing. Like the centrifugal pump, it uses an impeller motor to create suction that pulls the water upward. This design is unique because it moves the water upward through a pipe in the narrow opening, called the jet, at the top. The constriction of the jet creates pressure that speeds up the rate at which the water moves. This type of pump is cost-effective and works for a shallow well up to 25 feet deep.

4. Deep Jet Pump

Also called a double drop jet pump, this pump has the same assembly as the shallow jet pump. Its dual setup is designed to work in wells deeper than 25 feet. The jet sits down in the well, with the impeller motor located above in the well housing. With the assistance of the “dropped jet” in the pipe, the motor can pull water up greater distances.
