With COVID-19 restrictions keeping fitness facilities closed or severely restricting training options, many mixed martial arts (MMA) enthusiasts have shifted to online sessions and home workouts. Although it's possible to perform many exercises and build strength and endurance without special equipment, setting up a gym with the right pieces can increase the effectiveness of your training. Here's what you need to get started.

How to Set Up a Home MMA Gym

1. Mats

Floor mats protect your body during strenuous MMA workouts. Available in multiple sizes to fit your space, kickboxing mats can be used during cardio and stand-up training exercises, as well as practice for wrestling and jujitsu. If you don't have the space for a large kickboxing mat or want extra padding for stretching and warm-ups, a large yoga mat is an affordable alternative.

2. Heavy Bags

Punching bags are necessary for MMA training. At the very least, outfit your home gym with a heavy bag—at least 50 pounds—for punching and kicking practice.

If you can't or don't want to mount the bag from the ceiling, choose one that comes with a stand or a moveable bag. Moveable options are common in many MMA gyms because they offer a realistic response to punches and kicks. If you want to work on the speed and accuracy of your punches in addition to building strength, include a speed bag in your equipment purchases.

3. Sparring Tools

A sparring “partner” like a grappling dummy can improve your fighting skills. Adding a training unit with a model of a head and torso on a moveable stand is also beneficial. This equipment can increase your punch and kick accuracy by allowing you to see where the strikes land.
