With a significant number of people having received the COVID-19 vaccine, many are returning to the gym for their usual workout routines. However, the virus and its variants necessitate certain measures to keep yourself and those around you safe. In addition to following any guidelines and restrictions the fitness center has issued, here are several safety tips to use while at the facility.

How to Work Out Safely During COVID-19

1. Wear a Mask

Whether you’re vaccinated or not, the CDC recommends wearing a mask at the indoor gym. Doing this can prevent contracting or transferring COVID-19 to other members.

It’s especially important as the Delta variant of the coronavirus is spreading, as research shows that vaccinated individuals can spread it. Keep a pack of masks in your locker so that you have a backup in case the one you're wearing breaks.

2. Follow Distancing Rules

Along with wearing masks, social distancing is still recommended. Many gyms block off every other machine or mark 6-foot distances between workout stations on the floor. Follow these guidelines if your facility has them.

When unsure, ask gym staff or use your best judgment. As a rule of thumb, 6 feet is the equivalent of a standard mattress or the height of a refrigerator. Don't be afraid to speak up if someone isn’t following distancing rules; politely explain the importance of this safety measure.

3. Disinfect

The gym staff should be constantly disinfecting machines, but it’s also the members’ responsibility. There should be disinfecting spray and paper towels around the facility. Apply the disinfectant on handles, bars, benches, and other equipment before and after using the machines to ensure you neutralize the virus.
