Vehicle mufflers limit noise coming from the exhaust system. While a mechanic can notify you of any issues during the annual auto inspection, it can be challenging to identify them on your own. Here are a few red flags that signal your muffler needs attention.

4 Indications It’s Time to Replace the Muffler

1. Loud Exhaust

Vehicle owners should be familiar with their cars’ typical noise levels. If the exhaust is louder than usual, it may be due to a muffler exhaust leak, like a hole or crack. This damage can be caused by age-related corrosion or trauma from an accident.

These loud noises can occur when the muffler doesn’t contain the exhaust, causing it to reflect the sound to the engine through a tube. Disruptions to the muffler can prevent the sound from reflecting and allow it to escape, creating a roaring or rattling noise.

2. Low Gas Mileage

mechanicVehicle mufflers improve efficiency by ensuring the engines expel gasses they burn. If the muffler isn’t in top shape, the car can’t get rid of these pollutants quickly and may heat or fail. Engines that inhale burnt gasses that should’ve exited the exhaust will require more gasoline because they have limited engine power.

3. Interior Fumes

Inefficient mufflers may cause gas to back up into the vehicle’s interior. You may smell smoke and chemicals while driving and notice a haze in the air if the exhaust system is failing. These fumes can contain carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons that can poison passengers in the vehicle, creating a safety hazard.

4. Exhaust Condensation

After a car parks, the engine and exhaust cool, and moisture mixes with air in the muffler. This reaction occurs whenever you run the car, regularly exposing the muffler to water. The muffler is made with light steel that can rust when repeatedly cycled between hot and cold temperatures and exposed to condensation. Continuous exposure will cause the part to wear quicker than normal.
