Do you remember the year you bought your refrigerator? Was it so long ago you can’t remember? Perhaps it came with the house or apartment. Either way, it’s likely you rarely think about it because even used refrigerators will give years of service with little trouble. But all appliances have a lifespan. Below are five signs it’s time to get a new refrigerator.

Signs You Need a New Fridge

1. Excess Freezing

Newer refrigerators often have “frost free” freezer compartments that shouldn’t create ice, but older models may have to be defrosted once or twice a year. In either kind, a frequent buildup of frost or ice may be a signal that the thermostat or seals are malfunctioning and the freezer needs repair or replacement.

2. Refrigerator Is Ten Years Old or Older

A refrigerator may last up to 20 years with few problems, but it’s more likely that you will start seeing the need for repairs at around age 10. Side-by-side models have an even shorter life span. If yours is starting to need occasional repairs and is over 10 years old, it’s time to start shopping for a new or newer used refrigerator. Many appliance stores will refurbish and certify lightly used refrigerators, and some will come with a limited warranty.

3. Food Spoilagefood-spoilage-bad-refrigerator

Food spoiling rapidly or growing mold before it should is a sign that the fridge isn’t cooling properly nor keeping contents at a safe temperature. The fridge may not feel as cold inside as well. The compressor may be failing or the internal thermostat malfunctioning.

4. Constantly Running

Most fridges have a normal off/on cycle for the motor to keep the interior at the set temperature. A constantly running motor isn’t good. It may mean that the motor itself is bad or that other parts are malfunctioning and forcing the motor to run to compensate. Older, used refrigerators may run more often or noisily than new ones. If the back of the fridge feels especially hot, this is also a signal that the motor may be working too hard.  Get to know the normal, proper functioning of your fridge so you can tell when it’s not running well.

5. Leaks or Excess Condensation

If the fridge is coated in excess condensation on the outside, check the seals to see if they are functioning properly. Condensation on the inside is an indicator that the thermostat is off. Leaks or pools of water on the floor around the appliance are dangerous and a signal that the refrigerator is going bad.
