4 Tips for Handling a Forklift Load
Warehouse safety is crucial for maintaining an accident-free work environment. That’s why it’s important for each forklift load to be handled with the utmost care. Operator training and following the instructions given by your forklift dealer pertaining to your specific model are good places to start.
How to Safely Handle a Forklift Load
1. Don’t Overload It
Follow any warnings or directions about the forklift’s weight capacity, and do not overload the machine. Avoid adding extra weight to balance out an overload, as this puts the machine at risk for tipping or breaking down. By ensuring the load doesn’t go over the machine’s maximum weight capacity, you can avoid workplace accidents and save the machine from unnecessary wear and tear.
2. Approach Your Load Carefully & Slowly
Approaching a load at a fast speed increases the chances of tipping the machine, which can send you back to your forklift dealer for repairs or a new machine. While approaching the load slowly, make sure that the load is centered in front of the forklift. Then set the direction control to neutral, and hit the brakes to ensure the machine is completely stopped, before raising the forks.
3. Make Adjustments
When loading, tilt the mast back for optimal stability. This is especially true with maximum capacity loads. Never tilt the mast forward with a load when the forks are elevated except to pick up a load. Make sure to insert the forks as far under the load as possible, and adjust the forks’ width as wide as they can go for even distribution of the weight.
4. Lift & Lower the Load
It is important to take your time while lifting and lowering a load. This gives you opportunities to check your surroundings and stop if you have to, as well as make any necessary adjustments. Don’t forget to check for clearance before lifting, and make sure the load is secure to avoid dropping part or all of the load.
