Safety is of paramount importance in any warehouse, which is why you should ensure your forklift operators are trained and certified in operating their machines. Getting a certification isn’t complicated, and a forklift dealer can provide most of the materials and information required for the training. Here’s what you need to know about the process.

What Is a Forklift Certification?

Earning a forklift certification means that you have been trained in how to operate a specific type of forklift, such as a sit-down or stand-up lift truck, in your work environment. To earn the certification, you have to complete formal instruction or training in the safe operation of the machine, pass an exam, and undergo an evaluation of your skills by a licensed trainer. The certification is good for three years, after which you must be re-evaluated. The certification is transferable between employers, provided that you are using the same type of forklift.

Is Getting a Forklift Certification Mandatory?

forklift dealerOSHA requires certification of all forklift operators to improve the safety of the workplace. Although, the agency doesn’t provide training and certification programs, as they leave that to individual employers, forklift dealers, and independent third-parties. The law says that anyone operating a forklift must have a certification that contains their name, the date of certification, and the name of the person conducting the training and evaluation. Employers must maintain records of this certification, and they are solely responsible for ensuring that all operators are properly certified.

How Do You Become Certified as a Forklift Operator?

In many cases, the employer will provide the necessary training using a program provided by the forklift dealer when the machine is purchased. You may also sign up for a third-party training program, which may be offered by a forklift dealer, adult education program, or job training center. A forklift training program typically includes six to eight hours of instruction, including classroom lectures and hands-on training. Upon completion of the course, you may take a written exam. Certification concludes with an evaluation of your skills by a trained evaluator, who will issue your certification.
