What Is a Forklift Certification?

Is Getting a Forklift Certification Mandatory?

OSHA requires certification of all forklift operators to improve the safety of the workplace. The law says that anyone operating a forklift must have a certification that contains their name, the date of certification, and the name of the person conducting the training and evaluation. How Do You Become Certified as a Forklift Operator?

In many cases, the employer will provide the necessary training using a program provided by the forklift dealer when the machine is purchased. You may also sign up for a third-party training program, which may be offered by a forklift dealer, adult education program, or job training center. A forklift training program typically includes six to eight hours of instruction, including classroom lectures and hands-on training. Upon completion of the course, you may take a written exam. Certification concludes with an evaluation of your skills by a trained evaluator, who will issue your certification.
