An intact windshield is among a vehicle's most important features to maintain visibility and safety on the road. However, if your car's windshield has sustained damage, you might not be sure whether to opt for windshield repair or replacement. Here's a guide to help you know when each is necessary.

When Should I Repair My Windshield?

When assessing the extent of the damage to your auto glass, the size and placement are key factors. In general, small chips and cracks can be repaired effectively, meaning that your view will be unobscured and your windshield will be stable. This is especially true when the damage is far away from the edge of the windshield and not directly in your line of vision. Shallow chips under two inches in length are also good candidates for windshield repair, as are cracks that are shorter than six inches, which is roughly the length of a dollar bill.

When Should I Replace My Windshield?

Replacement is a better option when dealing with more significant damage. If a chip is deeper than about 3/8th of an inch, which means it would be more than halfway through the auto glass, most professionals recommend replacement. This is also the case for cracks that extend beyond six inches, as they're likely to continue getting worse as you drive.

When a crack extends to the edge of the windshield, a replacement is also typically necessary. These cracks can damage the stability of the windshield, which can result in much worse damage if you get into an accident. The type of glass is another factor to consider. Laminated glass has two outer layers which help keep it together in the event of an impact. Tempered glass does not, so it usually needs to be replaced when it is damaged.
