With autumn quickly approaching, Missouri residents should begin preparing their lawns for cooler weather. The guide below offers advice for cutting your grass and using fertilizer during this season. This way, come springtime, your yard is as healthy as it can be.

How Should You Maintain Your Lawn in the Fall?

1. Mow

Grass will continue growing until the first frost. With this in mind, don't tuck your lawnmower away in your garage or shed until that time. Overly tall grass attracts pests and develops weaker roots, which are more susceptible to winter damage. In addition, when you cut tall grass, it is harder on the mower and leaves behind a thick thatch of dead clippings that block sunlight. Instead, cool-season grasses should be kept about 2-2.5 inches tall.

2. Fertilize

For those who only use fertilizer once a year, fall is the ideal time to sprinkle this product onto your lawn. Fertilizer strengthens roots by providing them with nutrients like nitrogen. Stronger roots can absorb more water to survive the winter. This also reduces yard mud puddles.

Water the yard a few days before applying the fertilizer. Then, you can use a spreader to distribute the product. It's recommended that you start on the outer edges of the lawn and work your way into the middle.

3. Aerate

Your lawn's root system is integral to the health of your grass throughout the year. As temperatures start to drop, soil can become compacted and prevent water, nutrients, and air from reaching the roots. Aerating your lawn combats this issue. This process involves using a plug or spike aerator to create tiny holes in the ground to facilitate air and water flow.

4. Remove Debris

Most importantly, continue to monitor and tidy your yard. As leaves, twigs, and other debris start to fall, collect these pieces so that they don't live on your grass for the entire season. By removing dead leaves, moisture won't become trapped between the leaves and your grass. Plus, your grass will still have access to sunlight.
