Freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and strong winds can take a toll on tractors, plows, harvesters, and other heavy machinery. Preparing your farm equipment for winter will help ensure it will be ready for use in the spring. The following guide provides maintenance tips on how to protect your farm supplies from the elements.

A Guide to Winter Farm Equipment Maintenance

1. Clean Thoroughly

Completely clean mud, dirt, and other grime from your farm supplies and equipment before placing them in storage. If debris is left on components, it can harden and be more challenging to clean when you're ready to use your items again. Caked-on debris may also cause jams that affect operation.

Thoroughly dry all parts after cleaning to avoid rust and mildew formation. Put grease or a rust protector over any bare metal to help it continue to avoid moisture intrusion.

2. Disconnect Battery

To avoid drainage or leaks, disconnect the batteries from all equipment that won't be used during the winter. Carefully clean any corrosion and other debris on the terminals to make it easier to charge the battery later. Then, store the battery in a dry, safe, and covered area. While you can keep batteries in a wood, plastic, or glass container to avoid them absorbing moisture from the ground, do not put them in anything metal.

3. Check Fluid Levels & Filters

Check the oil, fuel, and other fluids to make sure they are topped up and the correct color. Change or replenish them as necessary. You should also examine all filters for clogs or damage. Replace any that are worn or covered in debris.

4. Make Repairs

Wires and belts should be assessed for fraying, cracks, and holes. Allowing damaged parts on farm equipment to sit over winter can create bigger repair problems. Rust and corrosion may set in and affect operating capacity. Getting a jump-start on making repairs will also provide you with ample time to order and ship necessary products.
