Spring is a wonderful time of year to add new plants to your garden because the conditions are right for nurturing your favorite vegetables. Harvesting your own food gives your family an opportunity to take control of their nutrition and discover some delicious new favorites. Here are three bulk seed varieties to pick up the next time you’re at the store shopping for lawn and garden supplies.

Which Vegetables Should You Plant This Spring?

1. Lettuce

Whether you’re a beginner or just want to grow something quickly, lettuce is a versatile addition to any garden. It’s simple to grow from bulk seeds, and there are many varieties available. Planting them eight weeks before the season’s final frost is ideal, and spacing them at least half an inch apart will provide optimal room for growth. Keep the soil thick and loose and sow the seeds approximately a quarter-inch deep for the best results. Thin the bed to about 6 inches once the plants start to grow full leaves.

2. Radishes

If you want to see the results of your hard work relatively quickly, plant radishes. They’re available in a number of sizes, and some are ready to pick within about four weeks. Be mindful of weather conditions, since radishes require more consistent watering if there’s a drought. You can continue to plant the seeds every couple of weeks and grow fresh bunches throughout summer and into fall. Keep the soil loose and plant the seeds about a quarter-inch deep. When the seeds start to sprout, thin the beds to 2 inches apart so the hardiest plants continue to thrive.

3. Kale

When you don’t want to worry too much about fluctuating temperatures, plant kale. This resilient green tolerates cold snaps well, and also handles warm weather nicely. It can withstand early planting because it retains its integrity in a wide range of weather conditions. Edible plants will be available in about a month. Simply sow the seeds approximately half an inch deep and spaced at least an inch apart for room. Once the seedlings start to grow, thin the beds until they are 6 to 8 inches apart.
