Just like humans, cows have different nutritional requirements at various life stages. Dairy and beef cows, in particular, must be prepared for breeding, lactation, or slaughter. If you’re unsure what to purchase from your feed dealer for your pregnant cattle, here’s what you need to know.

Why Pregnant Cows’ Nutritional Needs Are Different

Producing a calf requires a significant amount of energy and can take a toll on a cow’s body if she doesn’t receive adequate care. Keeping a heifer strong during her pregnancy increases the chance of a healthy calf and healthy cow post-partum. After the birth — a stressful event in itself — the cow needs to heal, produce milk, and be able to breed again. If a cow is in poor shape before giving birth, she may not be able to reproduce as quickly as she should after giving birth.

What to Feed a Pregnant Cow

feed supplierIn the 50 to 60 days before giving birth, a 1,200-pound cow should consume about 26.5 pounds of dry matter with total digestible nutrients (TDN) of 54.6%. In this period, her protein should be about 8% crude protein. In the 80 to 90 days after calving, the cow has the highest demand for nutrients as they are lactating and healing.

The average cow needs about 27.6 pounds of dry livestock feed, like hay or grain, which should be at least 59% TDN. For younger cows still developing, the nutrient requirements are even higher. Older cows who are losing weight may also need to be fed more, along with their 2- or 3-year-old counterparts. Also, analyze feed for mineral content to ensure cows are getting enough. Your feed dealer can also provide this information.
