Cultivating a lush, green lawn is any homeowner’s dream, and you can achieve it with the right fertilizer. It protects the soil; promotes growth; and builds resistance to heat, pests, and weeds. Follow these guidelines to choose and apply the right type for your lawn.

Understanding the Grade

All fertilizer is made of three macronutrients. Nitrogen helps plants grow, form leaves, and generate protein. Phosphorus promotes root growth and blooming. Potassium also encourages growth while increasing drought resistance. The exact ratios for each mix are printed on the bag or bottle as three bold numbers separated by dashes. The first number represents nitrogen, followed by phosphorus, and then potassium.

Choosing Granular or Liquid

FertilizerYou can purchase and apply fertilizer as either a liquid spray or granular spread. Liquid spray feeds your lawn immediately with an even application. However, you must apply the product multiple times during the year, and it can be expensive. Bulk fertilizer is available for granular application, and the grass only needs two to three feedings per year. Since you must use a spreader, the application is not as even as with liquid.

Proper Fertilizing Techniques

For new lawns, fertilizing earlier is optimal, ideally a day before it rains. Plan to start fertilizing in the spring with additional applications every eight weeks. If you have an automated sprinkler system, you may need to apply every six weeks. To spread the fertilizer evenly, apply half going one direction and the other half in the opposite direction. The result is a crisscross pattern that covers all the spots.
