The warm weather and long days of summer encourage many people to be more active during the season, such as swimming, beach combing, cookouts, sports, and other activities. Unfortunately, overdoing it can sometimes lead to trouble. For instance, sunburns need creams and cooling treatments, and back strains or sports injuries require a chiropractor. To stay safe while remaining active this summer, here are a few tips to follow.

How to Stay Active Safely This Summer

1. Beware of the Sun

Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet radiation can result in sunburn, cell damage, and even the growth of skin cancer. It is thus important, for health reasons, to protect yourself from the summer sun. Try to remain in the shade, when possible, or wear clothing that protects your arms and legs if you expect to be outdoors without shade. This is particularly important between about 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is at its most intense. Also, apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to your face and other exposed areas.

2. Stretch Before Strenuous Activity

Before swimming, jogging, or participating in sports, be sure to warm up gradually and stretch your muscles. Rotate your arms in broad circles, perform squats with lifted arms, and stretch your calves and thighs. Proper care of your muscles before strenuous activity protects you from charley horses and helps minimize your need for a chiropractor.

3. Never Swim Alone

Before jumping into a pool or heading to the beach, be sure you have a "swim buddy" to keep an eye on you. It's essential that someone else is around to help you—or at least sound the alarm—if you encounter trouble. You could slip on the pool patio, bump your head when diving, or encounter unfamiliar water conditions. This is a good rule of thumb for all swimmers, but it is particularly important for children.
