One of the most beloved treats of the holiday season is the candy cane. Made almost entirely of sugar, these peppermint-flavored crooks can contribute to the bacteria buildup that causes cavities and an emergency trip to the dentist. If your children love candy canes, here’s what you can do to ensure they enjoy them safely.

Do:

Choose small canes.

Eating a full-size candy cane can take a while, and the extended exposure to sugar will heighten your children’s risk of cavities. If they want to eat this festive treat, give them miniature versions or break it in two and have them share it. Make sure your youngsters drink plenty of water during and after enjoying their candy to wash away residual sugars.

Use them as a flavoring.

dentistTo prevent your children from exposing their teeth to sugar, give them the pepperminty flavor they want by incorporating it into other treats. Melt a piece of candy cane in their hot cocoa, or crush the cane and sprinkle them on festive cookies and brownies.

Don’t:

Bite them.

If your children are eating candy canes, watch them carefully to ensure they don’t bite on them. Due to their sturdy design, chomping down on this candy may crack or chip their teeth, providing an opening for bacteria. To prevent this issue, break the treats into small pieces so that your little ones don’t need to bite them.

Eat them too often.

Although your kids can enjoy this holiday goodie, offer them healthy snacks in between their candy canes. Carrot sticks, for example, are a healthy, crunchy snack that will support their teeth and brush away bacteria. If you need to, hide the treats, and restrict the number of candy canes your family can enjoy. You can implement a once-a-week rule or reserve enjoyment for when guests are over.
