If you're new to the world of computer technology, some of the terms may seem challenging to understand. The good news is that with a bit of practice and research, you can gain a basic understanding of computer networking terminology. Use this guide as a reference so you can work effectively with your IT services provider to resolve issues with your office computers.

4 Useful Computer Networking Terms

1. Network

A network features computers and other hardware that can share information and resources. Computers that are on the same network are capable of accomplishing tasks in unison and rapidly exchanging data via electronic means.

You need to have at least two computers to form a network, but it can host many computers in various locations. For example, all of the computers in your office could be on a network, or you could be part of a larger network that connects to a regional or national office.

2. LAN/WAN

IT services

LAN stands for local area network, and the term refers to parts of a network that are private to a company or organization. Hardware on a LAN network is not reachable to the general public via the internet. WAN, on the other hand, refers to the wide area network, or a network that is accessible to a broad group of people.

3. Firewall

A firewall blocks certain traffic from coming in or going out, and it's an important line of defense against viruses, cyber-attacks, and other malicious programs that can attack your network and destroy or steal sensitive data. Your IT services provider will configure your firewall so that it provides a high level of protection.

4. Packet

A packet is a small unit of information that's transmitted through a network. Like an envelope, packets carry data from one location to another. Packets also contain vital identifiers that help the information get to the right place. The actual information inside the packet is referred to as the payload or body of the packet.
