Kindergarten is your child’s first major step into education. It sets them up for the future and begins teaching core topics they’ll use for the rest of their lives. You want to be confident they have everything they need for success. Here are the primary topics taught in these programs.

A Guide to Kindergarten Curriculum

1. Literacy

While children begin learning their letters and sounds in pre-K programs, kindergarten is where they’ll master them. Teachers expect them to know all the letters and sounds, so they can begin learning to read. Your child will start sounding out words and learn to recognize other “sight words.” This is crucial because they will ultimately use what they learn as the foundation for reading.

2. Penmanship

As they learn to write both upper- and lowercase letters, your child will apply them to reading. During this process, teachers will explain basic grammar, such as nouns and verbs. This is a helpful component when learning to read, and writing is something your child will do for the rest of their lives. Encourage them to practice each day at home.

3. Basic Math

Many children enter kindergarten already knowing their numbers, and they’re ready to begin adding and subtracting. At the same time, teachers will help them learn larger numbers until they can recognize and recite those between 1 and 100.

4. Complex Shapes

Children continue learning shapes in kindergarten, progressing to more complicated ones like the rhombus. They'll also learn three-dimensional shapes like a cylinder. These eventually become a part of mathematics in later grades, so it's important your child not only recognizes the shapes but can also draw them.
