You rely on your iPhone for everything from contacting loved ones to getting the latest news. However, phones didn’t always have those capabilities. Whether you’re shopping for a used iPhone® or are simply interested in the evolution of the Apple® product, below is how it has changed over time to make it the technology leader it is today.
Shopping for Used iPhones? A Look at the Evolution of the Device
iPhone 1
The first generation of iPhones was released in June 2007 and was introduced as a phone that could also play music and allow you to browse the web. The touch screen was also revolutionary at the time. The iPhone 1 had one of the best displays, with a 320-by-480 pixel resolution and a 3.5-inch screen.
iPhone 3G
This second generation of iPhones became available in 2008. The phone was thinner and included a plastic back. One of the most exciting additions to this generation was the App Store®. The popularity of the App Store caused other companies to integrate it into their devices, such as the smart TV.
iPhone 4
The fourth generation of iPhones, which was released in June 2010, underwent a transformation as other companies began to try replicating Apple’s device. The iPhone became flatter with an antenna built into the device. It also had a Retina® display with a 640-by-960 pixel resolution along with a 5-megapixel camera and HD video recording.
iPhone 5
The sixth generation of iPhones was launched in 2012. These iPhones were 20% lighter than previous models and had a four-inch screen with a 640-by-1136 pixel resolution. The seventh generation of iPhones, also known as the 5S/5C, was similar to the iPhone 5 and was released in September of 2013. The main difference with these newer models was they had plastic backs and a larger battery.
iPhone 7
The iPhone 7 and 7 plus were released in September 2016. The cameras on both phones were the best yet, with a telephoto lens that allowed for incredible photography in low light situations. Another major change with this generation was the waterproofing capability. The phone could be held in liquid for a few minutes without damage. A final alteration was the removal of the headphone jack.
iPhone X
In September 2017, the iPhone X, or 10, was launched. The phone has a 5.8-inch Super Retina HD display with a 2436-by-1125 pixel resolution. Unlike the iPhones before it, the X does not have a home button, replacing it with Face ID® technology.
