Heavy traffic, looming delivery deadlines, and bad weather are some of the many stressors professional truck drivers must endure. Whatever your intended gig is after you complete your truck driving school education, it doesn’t hurt to start practicing relaxation techniques now. In light of National Relaxation Day on August 15, here are some ways you can relax while on the road.

How to Relax While Driving a Truck

1. Try Deep Breathing Exercises

Experiment with deep breathing and meditation exercises to calm yourself down before you start driving. Remember to breathe deeply through your nose and out through your mouth whenever you start to feel stressed or agitated; taking a deep breath instantly calms the mind and lowers blood pressure.

2. Take in the Landscapes

Keep breathing deeply while taking in a gorgeous sunrise or sunset, marvel at the beauty of pristine natural landscapes, or admire unique buildings. A truck driving school education provides the opportunity to experience some of the country’s most stunning sites and helps take your mind off of whatever is bothering you.

3. Plan as Best You Can, but Be Flexible

Plan your routes as much as you can based on the weather, how many stops you have to make, and any other factors. Remember that even the most thought-out plans can fall apart sometimes, and that’s okay. It happens to everyone. Find the humor in the situation instead of getting angry. Stress and anger affect you physically, as well as emotionally and mentally.

4. Take Care of Yourself

Take care of your health to avoid feeling stressed or upset. Not getting enough sleep makes people irritable and more susceptible to anxiety, as does an unhealthy diet full of processed foods and sugar. Get seven to eight hours of sleep as often as possible, enjoy a balanced diet full of whole foods, and drink plenty of water to help yourself feel relaxed and focused on the road.
