If you've lost one or more teeth, your dentist may have recommended dental implants as a solution. Patients who have never received this dental prosthetic may have questions about the process. Here's what you should know to help you feel more comfortable committing to this solution.

What's the Process for Installing Dental Implants?

1. Consultation

dental implants

A thorough assessment of your tooth and gum health is necessary to determine whether you're a candidate for implants. For example, your dentist may take X-rays to ensure you have a strong enough underlying jawbone to anchor the implant. People without sufficient jaw structure may still be able to get implants if grafting is used to build up the bone.

2. Procedure

If your dentist determines that dental implants are right for you, they'll schedule you for surgery. The part of the process takes a couple of hours and is done under anesthesia. During the procedure, the dentist cuts open the gums to expose the underlying bone. They use a dental drill to create a hole where the titanium post is placed.

3. Healing Period

After your first surgery, you'll need to allow the area where the gums were cut to heal. During this period, a process known as osseointegration takes place, in which the titanium rod fuses to the jaw bone. This can take anywhere from three to seven months, depending on the extent and location of the surgery.

4. Abutment Placement

Once you recover from the surgery, your dentist will place an abutment. This small piece of metal secures the crown or bridge. This is a less intensive procedure, and the recovery time usually takes about two weeks. Your dentist may affix a temporary crown to the abutment for the period while your permanent one is made.

5. Tooth Installation

The crown or bridge to be affixed to your abutment is custom-made to fit your smile. Even the color is chosen to match your surrounding teeth. It can take up to six weeks for the tooth or teeth to be made. Once they're ready, they're installed, and you'll have a new and improved smile.
