In dentistry, a tooth extraction is a fairly common procedure. They can be required for various reasons, from cavities to extensive tooth damage. If you’ve been told by your dentist that you or your child need to have a tooth pulled after a dental exam, you likely want to know what to expect from the procedure. Below is an explanation of the process itself and what to expect during your recovery.

The Procedure

Before your dentist begins the extraction, you’ll be given an anesthetic, either through localized injections or general anesthetic that will put you to sleep. Once you’re numbed or asleep, the physician will remove any gum and bone tissue covering the tooth to get clearer access to it, and then gently wiggle it to loosen its connections to ligaments and your jaw bone before pulling it. If the tooth is especially difficult to remove, it will be cut into separate parts which are then individually extracted. Gauze is packed into the socket and, if necessary, sutures are used to promote healing.

The Recovery

tooth extractionAfter your tooth extraction, it’s normal to experience some bleeding and discomfort. Leave any gauze that is packed into your gums in place for at least 30 minutes after leaving the dental office. In order to avoid dislodging the blood clot, eat soft foods like yogurt or mashed potatoes and avoid hot liquids. You can use ice packs and pain medication to reduce any discomfort, and you can still brush your teeth as normal–just not the ones surrounding the area where the tooth got removed. To avoid getting dry socket, you shouldn’t smoke or drink through a straw for at least 24 hours after the tooth is removed, and don’t vigorously rinse your mouth. If your sutures need to be removed, your dental office will schedule a followup dental exam.
