A Guide to Checking Tire Pressure on Tractors
There are many factors that contribute to the efficiency of a tractor, including tire pressure. Overinflating and underinflating tires are common mistakes that can waste engine power through increased slippage and rolling friction, respectively. The guide below explains how to check the air pressure on your tires and fill them properly for optimal performance.
How to Check Your Tractor’s Tire Pressure
1. Determine the Correct Tire Pressure
Before you check your tire pressure, you’ll need to figure out what the appropriate range should be. The air pressure will be measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). You might find the proper PSI printed on the rubber, somewhere close to the area where the metal rim and tire meet. This guideline may provide a range, from the minimum acceptable pressure to the maximum recommended pressure. Try to keep the air pressure in each tire within this range.
2. Use a Pressure Gauge
When filling a tractor tire, it is important to use the right type of pressure gauge. A calibrated pressure gauge is ideal because of its precise and reliable readings. However, if you use tire fluids, they can damage these types of pressure gauges. For tires with liquid ballast, use a spring-loaded pencil tire gauge that can handle fluids.
To check the air pressure, remove the tire’s valve stem cap, and press the pressure gauge firmly over the nozzle. Once you get a reading, compare that number to the PSI range printed on the tire. Keep a record of your results to track your air pressure over time. If you’re losing air at an unusually fast rate, you might be dealing with a leak. Check your tires for wear and abnormalities, such as sidewall fatigue and cracking.
3. Connect the Air Compressor
If a tire is under the minimum acceptable operating pressure, use an air compressor to fill it. Place the compressor fill valve securely over the tire nozzle and allow it to run for about ten seconds. Take off the compressor fill valve and check your tire pressure again, comparing it to the recommended PSI. If the reading does not fall within the proper range, continue filling your tire in 10-second cycles and checking the air pressure until it does.
