As summer ends, the weather will begin getting colder before you know it. When it’s time to break out the winter clothing, you want to be sure you have all the essentials covered. From hats to boots, here are a few items you need to keep warm when spending time outside this fall and winter.

What Clothes Do You Need for Cold Weather?

1. Insulated Vests

During activities such as hiking, you may feel hot in the sun or while being active if you’re wearing a full winter coat. Wearing an insulated vest will keep your midsection warm if you want to forego the heavier jacket in transition seasons. Vests are also essential for winter, as wearing layers is the key to comfort and warmth in cold weather.

2. Leggings

Leggings can be worn on their own or under other items, like snow pants. Leggings are also available with interior insulation, such as fleece, which increases the warmth factor exponentially. They can easily transition from outside to inside, which is great when grabbing a bite to eat in the ski lodge.

3. Boots

hatsInsulated work boots protect your feet from frostbite, which is a real concern if you’re working outside in the snow. Rugged boots can also keep your ankles stable when trudging through rough terrain or navigating around mud and ice.

4. Scarves & Neck Coverings

When frigid winds pick up, a scarf can be a lifesaver. Scarves can be worn loosely around the neck or wrapped around your mouth and nose to protect your face from freezing temperatures. Neck coverings, such as gaiters made from moisture-wicking materials, can also help keep you comfortable by soaking up sweat.

5. Knit Caps

Unforgiving winds also cause quite a chill when whipping around your head, but a snug knit cap will keep you warm. When shopping for a hat, look for one made from qiviut, which is a material made from the downy wool of the Arctic musk ox. Qiviut is quite durable, not prone to shrinkage, and not scratchy like other types of wool.
