Being asked to be a bridesmaid in a friend or relative’s wedding is exciting. Shopping for the perfect dress is a major part of the fun. It’s rare, however, to find a gown that fits perfectly off the rack. Even a minor alteration to the fit can make you and the bride look and feel beautiful on the big day.

Why Bridesmaid Dresses Need Alterations

Bridesmaid dresses almost always need some type of alteration. This is due to several quirks in how formalwear is designed and made that are different from the clothing you typically purchase.

When you try on bridesmaid dresses, the bridal consultant will take your measurements. Your largest measurement determines the size you should try on and order. Because gowns are often sized differently (usually smaller) than other clothing, the one that fits your largest measurement is likely to be ill-fitting in other areas. For example, a garment sized to your bust may need to have the waist and hips taken in.

alterationsGiven that many bridal salons only carry samples in a limited range of sizes, it’s possible that you won't be able to try on your actual size. If the dress is ordered based on your measurements, you may still find once it arrives that it needs a few adjustments to achieve the perfect fit.

Even if a dress does work well right off the rack, alterations to the hem or straps may be necessary for comfort. Bridesmaid dresses tend to be designed for taller women, so they may be slightly long. Even if you plan to wear heels, the hem should just skim the floor, so you don’t have to constantly lift or adjust your skirt.

Common Bridesmaid Dress Alterations

Hemming is the most common bridesmaid dress adjustment; in fact, some dresses come with unfinished hems to allow for custom tailoring. Other common choices include shortening straps so they fit snugly or taking in the waist.

Because there’s usually no easy way to add fabric for a longer hem or wider dress, tailors recommend purchasing a larger size when necessary. It’s much easier to take a seam in than to let it out, and the result is a dress that looks like it was made for you.
