Given that many bridal salons only carry samples in a limited range of sizes, it’s possible that you won't be able to try on your actual size. If the dress is ordered based on your measurements, you may still find once it arrives that it needs a few adjustments to achieve the perfect fit. 

Even if a dress does work well right off the rack, alterations to the hem or straps may be necessary for comfort. Bridesmaid dresses tend to be designed for taller women, so they may be slightly long. Even if you plan to wear heels, the hem should just skim the floor, so you don’t have to constantly lift or adjust your skirt.

Hemming is the most common bridesmaid dress adjustment; in fact, some dresses come with unfinished hems to allow for custom tailoring. Other common choices include shortening straps so they fit snugly or taking in the waist. 

Because there’s usually no easy way to add fabric for a longer hem or wider dress, tailors recommend purchasing a larger size when necessary. It’s much easier to take a seam in than to let it out, and the result is a dress that looks like it was made for you.
