Why TLC Drivers with a CDL Must Get a DOT Physical.
If you are a TLC licensed driver with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class A, B or C, there are two important reasons to remember to renew your DOT Medical card or Medical examiner’s Certificate.
- If you do not get a DOT physical before your medical examiner’s certificate expires your CDL may be downgraded.
- In addition, the Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) will NOT process your TLC driver’s renewal application.
Why is that you ask? Well, first off to operate a TLC licensed vehicle you must at least have a class E license a.k.a “For Hire, Taxi, Livery or Limo” license. The class E license is received after TLC approves your application and you are able to pass a medical examination and provide TLC with a Medical Certification Form from a licensed medical doctor that states:
"...applicant is of sound physical condition with good eyesight and no epilepsy, vertigo, heart trouble or any other infirmity of body or mind to the extent that it would render the applicant unfit for the safe operation of a licensed vehicle at all times of the day."
The taxi driver will then be designated as a Class E license holder by the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV). However, If the driver already holds a CDL (A,B,or C) which is required to operate trucks and buses, then the driver will not need to be designated as a Class E holder because they have a CDL.
In summary, if you have a CDL and you drive taxis, make sure you keep your medical card or medical examiner’s certificate up to date so that you can continue to work as a taxi driver and if you choose to, also as a truck driver. If you don’t have a CDL and have a Class E license, TLC will notify you as well to go see a doctor to get a TLC Medical Certification Form completed.
