Your septic system works hard to process the waste from your household. It's important to familiarize yourself with the proper care techniques to ensure it operates efficiently. This will help you avoid major issues and extensive repairs. Review the guidelines below to keep your septic equipment healthy.

Do:

Conserve water.

Using too much water can strain your septic system. When there's too much liquid in the tank, sludge can't separate and settle, causing solids to back up and block the pipes.

To help ease the burden, stagger loads of laundry throughout the week instead of doing them all on the same day. Swap out standard faucets and showerheads for water-saving fixtures, and use energy-efficient dishwashers, washing machines, and other water-using appliances.

Protect the drain field.

The drain field portion of the septic system should be kept clear. Any weight on the surface could lead to structural collapse and damage to the underground pipes. Plant trees and shrubs a considerable distance away — at least 50 feet — as roots can tangle around the lines and cause blockages.

Cover the drain field with grass to prevent erosion and keep the ground even to avoid standing water. If you're considering adding an addition or patio to your home, make sure you know exactly where the drain field is so that you don't build on top of it.

Don't:

Use additives.

Although there are products that claim to keep your septic tank clean, you should avoid them. The chemicals in these formulas  can contaminate groundwater, which is bad for the environment.

Additives can also disrupt the natural mechanics of the septic system, leading to solid waste flowing into the drain field. When the system functions properly, the bacteria and microbes in waste and soil keep things clean naturally without the need for chemical agents.

Flush inappropriate objects or chemicals.

Your septic tank is built to handle natural waste. Anything else has the potential to build up over time and cause major blockages and damage. Avoid overusing your garbage disposal and throw large food scraps and coffee grounds in the trash instead.

Never flush paper towels, sanitary napkins, or diapers down the toilet. Instead of pouring cooking oil or grease down the drain, store it in a glass container and throw it in the garbage.
